¿Que Pasa? in Richmond on Cinco de Mayo?

Want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo Richmond-style? Save the date and plan to attend the ¿Que Pasa? Festival of Virginia at historic Canal Walk on May 5 from 11 AM to 7 PM. Presented by The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and various sponsors, the festival aims to bring Latin culture to Downtown Richmond’s Shockoe Design District.

As Richmond honors the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, lovers of Latin American heritage worldwide are observing the same anniversary of Cindo de Mayo. The holiday celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Throughout the US, it is a day honoring pride in Latin American heritage. Canal Walk will be transformed to resemble the famous Floating Gardens of Xochilmilco. Visitors can take free boat rides, enjoy Latin American food, art, music and entertainment. There will be Zumba and Capoeira presentations, as well as performances by the Latin Ballet of Virginia, live band Agrupacion Masalla, salsa band Ban Caribe and the Miss Hispanidad Talent and Fashion Show.

Parking is available for a small fee at many parking decks near Canal Walk, and free on streets where indicated. Check the Historic Richmond Inns website to determine if your favorite bed & breakfast still has availability, and plan a relaxing stay with premium accommodations, gourmet breakfasts, unprecedented access to local culture and nightlife and our signature Southern Hospitality while you enjoy the ¿Que Pasa? Festival.

Charity Christmas Tree Viewing at Miller and Rhoads Downtown Richmond

50 Richmond charities + 50 generous sponsors + 50 sparkling trees = the 2011 Miller & Rhoads Charity Christmas Tree Contest and your opportunity to enjoy a veritable winter wonderland of delightful décor for many great causes.

This second annual charity event lights up the historic storefront windows of the department store that once exemplified the Downtown Richmond shopping experience; the building has since been restored as the ground floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. Volunteers from 50 charities decorate trees for the contest and local businesses sponsor the entry fees. Visitors and online fans contribute to the experience by voting for their favorite trees. The winning non-profit wins $1000! On January 6, all of trees will be auctioned off and 100% of the winning bid for each tree will be donated to the decorating charity. The higher the bids, the more that the community of Richmond benefits. If you’ll be in town, plan to attend and participate!

The patron for this year’s event is Ry Marchant whose father worked at Miller & Rhoads for 45 years. He started as an elevator attendant and retired as President and CEO. Ry’s childhood was spent at Miller & Rhoads, and he grew up as part of the store’s employee culture. Today, Ry is a Richmond attorney and co-owner of the Fan District restaurant Six Burner, and has plans to continue revitalizing Grace Street. His dedication to maintaining downtown Richmond as a premier destination for locals and visitors demonstrates his attachment to and love of the area. He is the first patron of the Charity Christmas Tree event.

The trees will be on display from December 6, 2011 through January 6, 2012. Make an evening of your trip and have dinner at one of the many fine downtown restaurant partners. And, of course, plan to stay at one of the six Historic Richmond Inns!
